Taiwan Betel Nut Girl Vs Cop

A TAIWANESE betel nut sales girl who was roughed up by a police officer and thrown to the ground while being arrested, has whipped up a media storm over the incident.

Betel nut girl, Yen Ju-yu, arguing with 37-year-old police officer, Luan Cheng, at her betel nut stall before their struggle by the roadside.

After shouting and swearing at each other, Luan is caught on camera for slamming the 19-year-old girl onto the ground outside her stall. Her right eye was bruised and her fingers on her left hand were injured.

The officer has since been removed from his current post.

Publicity stunt?

This incident has led some netizens to wonder if all this is but a publicity stunt on Yen's part in order for her to "gain entry" into the entertainment industry.

During an interview with the Taiwanese press, Yen said that because her father had died and her mother had ran away, she had no choice but to support her younger brothers and started working since she was 14 years old.

Besides selling betel nuts, she also pursued a modelling career and was featured on the cover of a magazine.

In response to the claims of a publicity stunt, Yen has refuted them.

"I never thought of it (entering the entertainment industry).

"I only want to seek justice for myself," said the betel nut salesgirl.

Ever since this incident was reported, Yen's blog has garnered hundreds comments - while some readers left words of encouragement, others told her off for "playing it up".

Police officer speaks up

Luan told the media that he had initially approached Yen to persuade her to behave herself after he caught her soliciting male customers to patronize her betel nut stand on Zhongzheng Road in Chungho City.

He tried persuading Yen to behave herself after seeing her squatting on the sidewalk, exposing her underwear beneath her mini skirt.

Luan felt that her behaviour was inappropriate and advised her for undermining public decency. This was when they started quarrelling.

Footage from security cameras showed the two exchanging crude comments. Yen even threatened the police officer by saying: "Hit me if you have the guts!"

During the heated argument, Yen then pulled down the metal gate of her stall and went inside.

This was when Luan allegedly charged at her and threw her on the ground.

He justified his actions by saying that if he had not taken action, he would have been locked inside the stall.

A passerby who witnessed the incident told Luan not to be too forceful as he was afraid he would break Yen's arm, and Luan's reply was: "That's not my business."

Taiwanese authorities who are aware of this incident said that the way Luan had handled the situation was "appropriate".

However, media reports said that Luan has since regretted using force on Yen. He is likely to be switched to another location.

Bottle Walls

Taiwan has begun converting 1.5 million recycled plastic bottles into a nine-storey building which will be the venue for an international event on the island.

The 300 million Taiwan dollar construction is the world's first large-scale building made from recycled bottles and can resist earthquakes, according to its sponsor.

The pavilion is to host fashion and environmental protection shows at the Taipei International Floral Exposition in November.

"The bottles are processed to make bricks that can resist earthquakes and powerful winds to build the world's first exhibition hall of its kind," said Rachel Chen, from the Far Eastern Group, which is sponsoring the pavilion.

Work on the building is due to be completed by the end of the month, the group said.

Taiwan is keen to promote green technology and architecture as it seeks to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

We burned our abusive father to death

Two Taiwanese teenagers have been arrested for burning their 45-year-old father to death in revenge for what they described as severe physical abuse, police said Tuesday.

The victim, identified only by his surname Tseng, was allegedly drugged Sunday by his 17-year-old son, who is accused of taking him to a field with the help of his 18-year-old sister and her boyfriend, aged 26, police said.

A witness reported seeing the trio watching a fire burn in the field where the charred body of the victim was discovered several hours later, the police in southern Pingtung county said.

The brother and sister, who were arrested Tuesday, had admitted to plotting Tseng's death but defended their alleged actions by saying they were victims of domestic violence, police said.

The sister's boyfriend was also arrested.

According to Taiwan's Central News Agency, Tseng, who was divorced 11 years ago, was alleged to have frequently beaten his children with belts.

Taiwan Whale Explosion

A whale intended for research exploded on a Taiwanese street, soaking passersby in blood and guts.

The sperm whale, which had died on the beach and was being transported back in 2004 through Tainan for study, burst because of gases building up in its body from decomposition. It soaked several cars and curious pedestrians nearby, forcing residents and business owners to wear masks to clean up the debris.

“What a stinking mess. This blood and other stuff that blew out on the road is disgusting, and the smell is really awful,” commented one resident.

The whale weighed 50 tons and was 55 feet long, making it the largest ever found in Taiwan. It was taken to a Tainan university, which sent it on to the Shi-Tsao natural preserve for study. The whale’s girth took 13 hours, three large lifting cranes and 50 workers to get the creature on trailer truck for its final trip.

Despite the mammal’s grisly explosion, enough of the whale remained for it to be researched by marine biologists.
