Fish trapped in dried lake bed

Yunnan hit by severe drought
A villager surnamed Zhang sighed, “Over the past 40 years, this lake has never dried up.” When the lake dried up, villagers came and took away the large fish. The smaller ones, took a desperately dove into the mud, eventually dying slowly as the lake’s water vanished. Seeing it is heartbreaking.

6 Strange Asian Beverages

Sodas and other beverages made for the Japanese market can often seem strange to us in the Western world. But what may seem like an odd flavor to us is often very popular in Japan.

From curry-laced soda to “cheese drink”, here are some strange Japanese beverages you may not have heard of.

1. Curry and Wasabi Ramune

Ramune is a popular Japanese soda that is usually fruit flavored, and is recognized by its unique bottle shape and glass bead stopper. However, Ramune also makes two strongly flavored sodas: Curry and Wasabi.

The label on the curry flavored Ramune explains that it is actually a combination of curry and lemonade flavors.

2. Pepsi White/Yogurt Pepsi

This limited edition version of Pepsi blended the sweet taste of cola with the creaminess and tartness of yogurt.

3. Fanta Furufuru Shaker

This beverage starts off in a semi-gelled state, but when you shake it, the Fanta becomes carbonated. Seems like shaking a carbonated beverage never ends well, though…

4. NEEDS Cheese Drink

Because Japan is an island nation, it has been historically hard to support a large dairy industry because of the limited amount of available land. Therefore, many Japanese people have never developed much of a taste for milk products. Today, however, some companies are hoping to introduce more dairy into the Japanese marketplace. One such attempt is NEEDS cheese drink, which reportedly tastes a bit like yogurt.

5. Coolpis Kimchi

Fermented cabbage? Hot peppers? Sounds like a refreshing drink to me!

6. Breast Enlarging Drink

Okkikunare brand drinks contain a soy additive that the company claims can increase breast size. “Okkikunare” literally means “make them bigger!”

Pictured above are the mango and peach flavors.

Library book returned 45 years late

LONDON - Staff at the Dinnington library are used to people bringing books back late but the package they received last month was in a class of its own.

It contained a paperback first edition copy of "Quatermass and the Pit" by Nigel Kneale which had been borrowed on September 24, 1965.

"I thought at first it was just a normal return, until I saw the color of the pages: they were very brown around the edges," said Alison Lawrie, the Principal Library Assistant.

"It's true that some people like to take their time with a good book, but 45 years is an incredible amount of time!"

Staff believe the book was borrowed from the old Dinnington Library, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire which opened in 1936 and is close to the current building which opened in 2000.

However, the identity of the borrower remains a mystery because records do not go back that far -- and there would have been no danger of a huge accumulated fine because all fines are capped at 6 pounds .

Dog saved abandoned human baby

South American dog, this one from Argentina, was credited not with saving a dog but with saving a human baby. The video of that dog story can be seen here. A young Argentinian teenager gave birth to the premature baby boy in a shantytown, panicked, and left the baby in a field of rubbish and wooden crates. La China, a dog who is a mother in every sense of the word, discovered the abandoned baby. The dog saved the newborn by carrying it 50 meters and placing it among her own litter of pups.

A villager learned that the dog saved a newborn when he heard the baby's cries and investigated. The baby had little chance of survival had La China's mothering instincts not kicked in, according to officials at the hospital where the baby was later brought. In the field where La China the dog saved the newborn, the temperature was 3 degrees centigrade.

To many dog owners, the dog saved newborn news does not come as a surprise. There have been stories of heroic dogs saving their human friends as long as there have been dogs and humans.

A Week in the Life of an Escort

A story of an social escort.

What Draws a Person into This Lifestyle?
It was Monday afternoon when I arrived in the City to meet one of my old friends. We had not seen each other in some time and I decided to go visit with her over my spring holiday. I had known for sometime what kind of
lifestyle she had been leading. I just had no clue how it worked and how she could make a living as a female "Escort."

When I arrived she had booked me a luxurious suite at a very up scale Hotel. Walking into the room was a treat in itself. A large desk, microwave, refrigerator, sofa, chair and T.V. caught my attentions quickly. Everything to make you feel right at home. When I opened the bedroom door, there was a beautiful king size bed. Dressed with pillows and shams to match the luscious comforter. The bathroom was dressed in black marble tile and brass faucets. I could have never afforded such a luxurious suite on my own salary.

It was not long before my friend showed up and we sat down and began my interview for this Article. I wanted to know all about her life and how things worked.
I wanted to know how she could possibly afford a hotel room so nice. I was very great full for her hospitality. This just seemed a little to much for a visit from an old friend.

Before I could ask another question she pulled out her blackberry and lined up one of her clients. There were several regular clients that she would see weekly.
Some would ask for only thirty minutes of her time, others would request several hours. New clients usually booked in thirty minute, one hour or two hour time limits. She always allowed her self time between each appointment to shower and dress for her next client. This way she gave the best attention she could offer to each person who requested an appointment with her.

When over looking her emails. I noticed that everyone used a code language. I totally had no clue as to what they were asking for and what it all meant. So my first lesson was to learn to understand the "Code" for the
"Escort" business. One person asked for a french kiss in his email. Requesting only a half hour session. She replied that the donation would be 50 dollars. Which I am told is more than reasonable for this service. Most escorts charge almost three times as much for their services.

At this point she began to tell me that many of them men were to busy to get involved in real relationships and found it much easier to just book occasional appointments with an escort. The escort then would go out to dinner or just sit and talk with them and often provide sexual favors for the right price.

She said that several men were just in need of cuddling and conversation. She often rubbed their back and talked with them for the entire appointment.

So sex was not always a part of her services. Of course each escort sets standards for what they will and will not do. When ever sex is involved she assured me that she took every precaution to protect both herself and her client.

I sat in the living room area of the hotel while she serviced several clients. I felt a bit uncomfortable at first. Then I realized that these were just normal business men dressed in suits or leisure clothes, there for a service. Much like seeing a therapist or doctor. Most of the men said hello and asked how my day was going. We made small chit chat until my friend was ready for her next client. Each time she appeared in a beautiful out fit, her make up and hair in perfect place.

She seemed to give special attention to each person. Almost every client asked when she would be able to see them again.

After four hours she came out and sat down beside me. Opened up her hand and showed me a vast number of 100 dollar bills. In four hours she had made almost 1000 dollars. Two customers had required a "french kiss" one customer had requested "full service" the others had just needed a back rub and some snuggle time. Almost afraid to ask........I finally needed to know what she meant by "French Kiss" and "Full Service"? She told me that a french kiss referred to Oral Sex. Either they requested to perform this on her or she was asked to perform this on the client. Full Service meant that they would want oral sex and everything up to and possibly including intercourse.

How does this differ from prostitution? What is the difference between an Escort, a call girl and a prostitute? The more I knew the more questions I had to have answered. I didn't want to hurt my friends feelings. But
most of the world does not choose this type of lifestyle as a way to make a living. My questions were hard for her to answer at first. There surely was nothing low class about where she was living or how she was dressed or the clients she serviced.
It all just seemed to be "Business."

My friend told me that "Call Girls" usually make "In Calls or out Calls" meaning they allow a man to come to them or they will go where the person is that wants their body. Most of the time it is strictly sex. They are paid for their body. Where as an "Escort is paid for her time." Not what she does with it. A prostitute walks the street, rarely uses safe sex practices and will do her deeds in a car or where ever the client can find a dark place. Making her activities low class and dirty to most of the public around them.

After a few days with my friend. We visited fine restraints and went out for an evening on the town. I found myself thinking that this was not such a bad way to live. It had me spoiled within a few days. Great cash flow, fine meals. Never a boring moment so it seemed. Her work took her in to the wee hours of the morning and sometimes through out the day. Depending on the demands of her clients. This is not a life style that I would choose for myself but how could I judge my friend for how she made her living? What seemed unprofessional to me, was very professional to her. She ran her services like a business. With the up most discretion and respect for her clients and their privacy.

Need A New Life? Then Get Ready to Die!

Life is a roller coaster with endless ups, downs, twists, and turns. Most of us manage without too much difficulty—whether by perseverance alone, or with the aid of prescription antidepressants—but not everyone can handle the stress; some people just feel like giving up.

It’s for them, and only them, that Jung Loon created the Coffin Academy.

A 39-year-old South Korean man bent on saving lives, as well as making money. He’s developed a seminar wherein, for $25 per person, men and women are forced to come to terms with their own mortality. They’re essentially given “a glimpse into the abyss.” (LA Times)

Inspiration for the Coffin Academy came from South Korea’s morbid suicide rate, which, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, is the highest among all its 30 member nations. (BBC News)

Jung first has his pupils prepare farewell letters for their family, a tearful process in which they are forced to “weigh their regrets and ponder eternity.”

The kicker comes afterward when, in a candle-lighted chapel, the students attend their own funeral and even lie in a coffin for 10 full minutes—with the lid shut!

“It’s a way to let go of certain things,” Jung told LA Times. Oh, he’s a former insurance company lecturer, by the way. He added, “Afterward, you feel refreshed. You’re ready to start your life all over again, this time with a clean slate.”

His overall goal is to teach depressed men and women to better appreciate the greatness of life by forcing them to deal with death. Being trapped in a coffin and surrounded by total darkness is apparently supposed to make these poor saps realize that suicide just isn’t worth it.

Whether the idea is original or not, we cannot say, but what we do know is that this concept of simulating death is being practiced all across South Korea. The Examiner pointed out, for instance, that the Kyobo insurance company (insurance again!?) requires that all its employees attend a fake funeral, such as that being offered by Jung.

Interesting concept. Would you be up for it? If so, then in the welcoming words of Mr. Jung Loon, “Let’s get close to death!”

We burned our abusive father to death

Two Taiwanese teenagers have been arrested for burning their 45-year-old father to death in revenge for what they described as severe physical abuse, police said Tuesday.

The victim, identified only by his surname Tseng, was allegedly drugged Sunday by his 17-year-old son, who is accused of taking him to a field with the help of his 18-year-old sister and her boyfriend, aged 26, police said.

A witness reported seeing the trio watching a fire burn in the field where the charred body of the victim was discovered several hours later, the police in southern Pingtung county said.

The brother and sister, who were arrested Tuesday, had admitted to plotting Tseng's death but defended their alleged actions by saying they were victims of domestic violence, police said.

The sister's boyfriend was also arrested.

According to Taiwan's Central News Agency, Tseng, who was divorced 11 years ago, was alleged to have frequently beaten his children with belts.

Man Eats Young Boy’s Brains to Cure His Epilepsy

29-year old Wang Chaoxu, who hails from the southwest Chinese village of Qixian, seems to have a nasty habit of killing children and eating their brains, believing them to be the cure for his epilepsy. 11-year old Li Xuetang disappeared one night, prompting his mother to become worried, and going so far as imploring the head of the village to make a radio broadcast on the off chance her song might see it.

Sadly, the young boy was found on January 23rd several hours later with his head opened and part of his brain removed. In a scene reminiscent of a horror film, a local villager by the named of Zhang Huansheng saw a man kneeling over the boy and holding him by the neck.

When Zhang approached the man, he passed the boy off as his son, saying “My child has passed out and I’m trying to wake him up. Baby, wake up, wake up.”

In addition to the young boy, a 3-year old girl was found in a public toilet with a knife wound to her head, and police are currently investigating whether the two deaths are connected.

Sidenote: He ate the brains with earthworms and ants. What a weirdo.

Chinese Girl Freaks People Out in the Elevator

It doesn’t matter what the situation, young Asian girls with long black hair and white nightgowns are creepy. As this video demonstrates, you don’t even need to be in the middle of a Japanese horror film to encounter one.

Whether or not it’s staged is a moot point, as I can only imagine that it would be terrifying despite already knowing she’s right behind the door. The video picks off seemingly innocent enough. A young woman, one who happens to bear a remarkable resemblance to Sadako from the Japanese movie, smiles and waves at the camera, then assumes a relatively innocuous position against the window in a hallway.

One by one the unsuspecting victims enter, presumably just going about their day like any other. As they enter the hallway, they are met with their worst nightmares: a little Chinese girl. Each individual reacts in much the same way – a quick jump, maybe even a loss of footing, then utter confusion as the young girl just stares at them as they walk by.

It’s not until the end when one unfortunate passerby gets a little too freaked out and decides to hit the poor girl and kick her over.

I don’t care where you’re from or who might be frightening you, that’s just rude

How to prepare for pregnancy

A special articles to share with ladies preparing to have babies.

WE plan meticulously for many things in life. We plan to buy a new home by saving up money and doing research about property.

We plan our weddings feverishly, poring over bridal magazines and choosing flowers with great excitement. We plan our career path by making strategic decisions in our workplace that will help us climb up the ladder of success.

If a woman were to put as much care and thought into planning her pregnancy, she can contribute a lot towards ensuring the health and well-being of her baby, as well as eliminating many of the uncertainties that are present during pregnancy.

The state of your physical health before you conceive plays a huge role in determining whether you will conceive and carry through a healthy pregnancy.

Who needs a pregnancy planner?

Every woman of reproductive age is a potential mum and should be aware of her body and health even if she is not consciously planning to have a baby.

It's good to practise prenatal care during pregnancy, but it is often the period before, and in the early stage of, conception that women forget about - and that is the most important time!

A baby is conceived about two weeks before a woman's period is due, which means that she most likely will not know that she is pregnant until she's more than three weeks into the pregnancy.

Yet the little one is most vulnerable in the two to eight weeks after conception, which is when the vital organs are beginning to develop. Any dangerous substances or injuries to your body at this point could cause irreversible damage.

That is why I tell my patients to start acting pregnant before they actually are. It may sound silly to go through life pretending to be pregnant, but in actual fact, you are creating a healthy and hospitable environment for the foetus-to-be and preventing problems such as birth defects.

If you are consciously planning to have a baby, you can start discussing with your doctor any time, even as early as a year ahead. Your doctor or obstetrician will be able to evaluate your health and identify health and lifestyle risks that may affect your future pregnancy.

Pregnancy planning covers a whole range of lifestyle elements, including diet and nutrition, body weight, exercise, intake of medications and other substances, immunisations, and genetic testing.

Healthy lifestyle habits

Your lifestyle covers a range of behaviours and practices in your daily life - many of which you may take for granted and not give a second thought to. It is important to pause and look at the areas of your life that need to be changed.

Eating healthily, maintaining the right body weight, and exercising regularly will help you keep in good health for conception, and reduce problems for you and your baby during pregnancy. What you should and should not eat is so important that I will explain it in an entirely separate article, which will form the second part of this series.

Linked to good nutrition is your body weight, which you need to monitor before and during pregnancy. If you're underweight or overweight before you conceive, try to get to a healthier weight - which not only makes it easier for you to conceive, but also reduces stress on your body during pregnancy and lowers the risk of problems like high blood pressure or high glucose.

What other habits would you need to discard or change? Smoking, drinking alcohol and taking drugs can cause problems for the baby in the womb, and after it is born. Smoking can cause miscarriage, bleeding, premature birth, low birth weight, as well as slower physical and intellectual development.

Alcohol can cause foetal alcohol syndrome, which contributes to birth defects, including mental problems, slow growth and physical defects. Abuse of illegal drugs like marijuana and cocaine is not only risky for the mother, but also causes harm to the baby, such as miscarriage, premature birth, or even addiction to the child when he or she is born.

There are no shortcuts to this - you have to stop smoking, stop drinking alcohol, and be drug-free if you want to get pregnant. This will have to go on during pregnancy and during the breastfeeding period as well.

Getting the right shots

If you are planning to get pregnant, you should see your doctor and ask whether you may be at risk of any infectious diseases, such as rubella or chickenpox, that could cause serious harm to your unborn baby during pregnancy.

Rubella can cause your baby to be at increased risk for deafness, heart problems, cataracts of the eyes, and mental retardation. Chickenpox during pregnancy causes congenital varicella in the baby, including problems such as scarring of the skin, weakening or withering of the arms and legs, and eye abnormalities.

If you test negative for immunity against these diseases, it means that you have never developed them before and you require vaccinations before you conceive. You should wait at least one month after the vaccination before trying to get pregnant - and if you are already pregnant, you should not receive either of these vaccinations.

Other infectious diseases that you should be concerned with are hepatitis B and HIV. If you are a carrier of the hepatitis B virus, your baby can be protected with immunisation during delivery. If you have HIV, there are antiretroviral medications that will be given to you during pregnancy, labour, and delivery to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to your baby.

Medications and illnesses

You may rely on medications for certain health problems, or on supplements, but be aware that many of these compounds can be dangerous to a foetus during pregnancy.

Normal over-the-counter medicines like aspirin can cause defects in the baby, while prescription medications, such as for asthma, epilepsy, thyroid problems, migraines or acne, may also be harmful.

Even certain supplements containing herbs or vitamins and minerals can impact the foetus' health during pregnancy. It is best to sit down with your doctor for a full review of the medications and supplements that you commonly take, when you are planning your pregnancy.

Needless to say, many women may be taking prescription medications to control chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. You should not stop the medications on your own, as these conditions can cause complications during pregnancy.

Hypertension can interfere with the growth of the unborn baby and increase the risk of foetal death, as well as preeclampsia. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to miscarriage or birth defects. To keep these conditions well under control throughout pregnancy, your doctor should switch you over to safer medications before you conceive. For instance, oral diabetes medications should be replaced with insulin instead.

Genetic testing

As medical technology improves every day, we know now more about diseases that run in the family, as well as other diseases that are linked to chromosomal abnormalities. Genetic testing and counselling can help you detect if you are at risk of, or carry these genetic traits.

Cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs, sickle cell anaemia, and certain neurological diseases are among the conditions that can be tested for genetic traits prior to pregnancy. If you are above 35 when you get pregnant, you may be at higher risk of having babies with chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down's Syndrome. These conditions can also be detected through genetic analysis.

Part of the planning process is counselling to help prepare you and your spouse for the risks of these pregnancies.

Other hazards

There are many other aspects of your daily life which you may have taken for granted, and which you will now have to be extra careful about, due to an impending pregnancy.

For instance, are you exposed to hazardous chemicals in your home or workplace? Stay away from strong-smelling cleansers, chemicals, paint, heavy metals like lead, copper and mercury, or materials that produce radiation, cardon disulphide, acids, and anaesthetic gases. If you do have to come into contact with them, reduce your risk by wearing rubber gloves, special equipment or working in a well-ventilated area.

Even cats can be a hazard! Cats' faeces can contain a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, which is harmful to an unborn baby. This parasite is also present in raw or undercooked meat, or dirt that has been contaminated by cat faeces.

While all the precautionary measures described above may sound insurmountable, it is a small price to pay for the health of your baby. Sometimes, all it takes are some small changes in your lifestyle or environment - it's not too much to ask of anyone.

Man Sleeps with Dead Wife for Five Years‏

They say love knows no boundaries, but this is taking it a little too far. A Vietnamese man has been sleeping next to his wife's corpse for the last five years.

Le Van, a 55-year-old man from Quang Nam province, Vietnam, lost his wife in 2003. Because he couldn't go to sleep at night without hugging his beloved spouse, he slept on top of her grave for about 20 months. When he couldn't stand the rain and wind anymore, he decided to dig a tunnel into the grave, so he could sleep with his wife. When the kids heard his crazy plan, they did everything they could to stop him, so Le Van had to think of another way he could cuddle up to his wife at night. In 2004 he unearthed her remains, wrapped them in pieces of paper and a clay mould and put a dummy mask on her face. The man has been sleeping next to his dead wife ever since.
